Time, Utilization & Profitability
Effective Hourly Rate
Definition
What you actually earn per hour after accounting for all time spent — including non-billable work, proposals that didn't close, admin, and scope creep. Formula: Total project revenue ÷ Total hours (billable + non-billable). You might charge $150/hr, but if a $15,000 project took 200 total hours, your effective rate is $75/hr.
Why It Matters
Your bill rate is a fiction. Your effective rate is reality. The gap between the two tells you where profit is leaking.
