Making Async Standups Work

Set a posting window, not a time

"Post by 10am your timezone" gives flexibility while ensuring visibility.

Keep it short

If your standup takes more than 2 minutes to write, you're including too much detail.

Blockers get immediate attention

Team lead should scan standups for blockers and address same day.

React, don't reply

Use emoji reactions (👍, 🔥, etc.) to acknowledge standups without cluttering the channel.

Mood check is optional but valuable

A simple emoji gives managers early warning if someone's struggling. Don't force it.

Common Mistakes & Tips

Writing a novel

Standups should be skimmable. 3-5 bullet points max. Save details for project docs.

Not following up on blockers

A blocker mentioned but never addressed makes standups feel pointless. Someone should own blocker resolution.

Inconsistent posting

If half the team skips standups, the ritual loses value. Make it a habit or drop it entirely.

Using standups for status theater

Standups should be honest, not performative. "Struggled with X" is more useful than pretending everything's fine.

How to Run This in Corcava

  • Connect your Telegram group — Post standups that sync to your project
  • Set up daily standup reminders — Bot prompts at your chosen time
  • Tasks mentioned in standups link to actual tasks — Auto-detection or manual linking

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need daily standups?

Depends on your team. Daily works for fast-moving projects. For slower work, 2-3x per week is fine. The point is regular visibility, not daily check-ins for their own sake.

What if someone misses a standup?

Don't make a big deal of it. If it becomes a pattern, address it privately. For occasional misses, just move on—async means flexibility.

Should standups replace meetings entirely?

They can replace the daily status meeting. You'll still need occasional sync meetings for complex discussions, planning, and relationship building—just less frequently.

How do I handle standups across timezones?

Set a window (e.g., "by 10am your local time") rather than a fixed time. People in earlier timezones post first; others catch up when they start their day.

Can clients see our standups?

Keep internal standups in a team-only channel. If clients want visibility, give them a weekly summary or a separate, curated channel with filtered updates.

What's the point of the mood check?

Early warning system. A week of 😐 or 😔 signals someone might be burned out or struggling. It's a lightweight way to surface team health without awkward direct questions.
